Preparing Your Garden For Spring

Spring Is Around The Corner

Spring is around the corner and it’s time to start preparing your garden. Of course we have to make sure that it doesn’t snow again and in our climate, in Southern Ontario, anything can happen. But depending on where you are, you might be able to start preparing your garden in March. We wanted to go over the next few months and talk about the different things you can do.

It’s March and you can start to work on clearing leafs and mulch. And you can also cut back any dead stems or perennials and start to plant bare-root plants. Make sure that before you plant anything that you have workable soil. Finally, you can begin to remove protective plant coverings, such as burlap and then all of a sudden we’ll find that we’ve made it to April.

Now it’s April and there’s now there’s more that can be done. Let’s start by cutting back summer-blooming shrubs such as hydrangeas. Then divide summer and fall-blooming perennials and you can start to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. You should also prune vines such as wisteria, climbing roses, etc. And we can’t forget to weed your garden, so that our plants have room to grow and be healthy. Before you know it, it’ll be May and there’s still lots to do.

The sun is shinning and everything is green and we can really see nature coming alive. We made it to May and our garden needs more work. You can continue to weed, that’s important to stay on top of. Deadhead spring-flowering perennials and divide spring perennials. Prune your lavender when the leaf buds break and prune spring-flowering shrubs immediately after they bloom. And don’t forget to remove any unwanted perennial seedings and finally, don’t forget to watch for pests. Can you believe that it’s finally June? It’s a whole new season. We’ll make sure that we have a summer gardening guide, so watch for that blog. We’ll talk about what you can do for your garden in June, July and August.
