What is Baby’s-Breath?

Baby’s-Breath is often thought as for the finishing touch to a bouquet, whether that’s for a wedding arrangement or not. This small flower is also found in gardens and in the wild. Also known as Gyposphila, it’s a genus of flowering plants and native to Europe, Africa and the Pacific Islands. This flower is also considered a “bedding plant,” used in gardens. 

Gardening with Baby’s-Breath 

You want to plant some Baby’s-Breath in your garden but you’re not sure where to start. Once you’ve found the right place that makes the most sense. It’s important to note that this flower needs to be planted in early spring when the ground is still a bit cold. This plant comes in both perennial and annual so it’s good to make sure you’re planting at the right time of year. And this is a cutting plant, so pruning will be needed in the months and years to come. There are two different types of Baby’s-Breath, annual and perennial. 

Annual and Perennial

To grow annual types you’ll want to plant 2-3 weeks after the last frost in early spring. Baby’s-Breath when planted grows 6 inches to 8 feet and are 1-4 feet wide. When the flowers start to grow and you should see some of the first blooms 4-6 weeks later. And both types need a soil that is not very acidic and must be in an area that drains well. The name Baby’s-Breath is derived from the Greek word meaning love. People often know the iconic flower for its appearance at weddings when love and joy are being celebrated.
